Black Ice – David Blackwood’s Newfoundland

Hauling Job Sturges House, 1979, etching and aquatint on wove paper, 43.9 x 88 cm, Gift of David and Anita Blackwood, Port Hope, Ontario, 1999
A native of Newfoundland, printmaker David Blackwood pictures a harsh existence in the Northern Canadian province. His world is either shrouded in insular mysteries and myths, veiled by snowy winds, aglow with infernal fires, or sharply lit by the bright sun, the clear moon beaming over vast expanses of white, rich with reflections. Fascination creeps in, as portentous sleep enfolds the benumbed wanderer in the cold.
